She created the agency’s four-year ESG strategy in early 2023 with the ambition of delivering
considered, achievable actions to help the business reach responsible carbon neutrality and help
drive sector-wide change from inside the organisation.
By achieving the Planet Mark certification, BeaconHouse Events has committed to measuring and
reducing its carbon footprint, engaging employees, and telling its story so others can follow suit.
The agency has adopted isla’s TRACE to gather data on the carbon impact of each event and has
put sustainability clauses in all client contracts. As a business it is also committed to the ‘Green
Meetings’ tourism accreditation, an accreditation recognised by the Meetings Industry Association
as a leading standard in sustainability and has started the B Corp journey.
“We no longer offer sustainability as an ‘optional extra.’ It’s how we do business. If clients don’t like it,
we probably aren’t the right fit. We make sustainability part of every event, whether the client asks
for it or not. It’s our responsibility to lead the way,” says Thackray.
Instead of traditional carbon offsetting, BeaconHouse created a local donation fund to support
environmental projects in the North East of England. The company donates 10% of event emissions
equivalent to local initiatives, focusing on tangible regional impact.
Recognising the role of suppliers in event sustainability, Thackray launched a Supplier Roundtable
Initiative in 2024, which brings together local venues, AV suppliers, and printers to drive collective
improvements. BeaconHouse also created a Supplier Code of Conduct, with 12 suppliers already
signed up, encouraging fair wages, ethical practices, and environmental responsibility, fostering
an inclusive and supportive ecosystem rather than penalising suppliers who lack formal
accreditations.
