Sustainability in the events industry has reached a tipping point.
What was once an emerging trend has now become a license to
operate—similar to how risk assessments and compliance have
become standard. It is a fundamental expectation from corporate
clients and employees alike. But while the rhetoric around
responsible event delivery has never been louder, how much real
progress is being made?
The Most Sustainable Agencies initiative set out to answer this
question, analysing agency’s internal sustainability policies,
accreditation trends, and real-world event practices to identify
those leading the charge. While the data reveals steady progress,
challenges remain, and the industry still has a long way to go.
The majority (94%) of our top 30
Most Sustainable Agencies, have
a de昀椀ned sustainability lead,
showing signi昀椀cant improvement
in governance, accountability and
commitment to sustainability.
Where previously the
responsibility was often
given to the one person in
the office who happened
to be passionate about
sustainability to manage on
top of their full-time job, the
fact that most agencies now
have at least one person
solely dedicated to driving sustainability is a positive step.
Not only that but many agencies now have teams of sustainable or
green champions touching each department of their business, and
some are going a step further and embedding sustainability into all
job roles so that everyone is accountable.
Could transition be faster? Of course, says event:decision director
Matt Grey, who scored and analysed the data. But he adds:
“events sit uniquely across all industry
classi昀椀cations, reliant on hospitality, catering,
travel and transportation, logistics and
technical. Many moving parts and a dynamic
and unique product make it hard to deliver
consistently at pace.”
